കൊച്ചി: കൊച്ചി മെട്രോ റെയില്‍ പദ്ധതിയുടെ കൂടുതല്‍ ജോലികള്‍ ഏല്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ തയ്യാറാകാത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഡല്‍ഹി മെട്രോ റയില്‍ കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന്‍ പിന്മാറി. അടിസ്ഥാന വികസന പദ്ധതികളില്‍ പണി തുടങ്ങിയവ മാത്രം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കിയാല്‍ മതിയെന്നും പുതിയ ജീവനക്കാരെ നിയമിക്കാതെ ഇവ പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കാനും ഡല്‍ഹി മെട്രോ റയില്‍ കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന്‍ കൊച്ചിയിലെ ഓഫീസിലേക്ക് കത്തയച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

സ്വന്തം നിലയില്‍ പദ്ധതി നടപ്പാക്കാനാകുമെന്ന കൊച്ചി മെട്രോ റയില്‍ ലിമിറ്റഡിന്റെ കത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ് കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന്‍ കത്തയച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

ഡല്‍ഹി മെട്രോ റയെില്‍ കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന് കൊച്ചി പദ്ധതിക്കായി ടെന്‍ഡറില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കാമെന്ന് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഇന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ ഇതില്‍ താല്‍പര്യമില്ലെന്ന് കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന്‍ അറിയിച്ചതായാണ് സൂചന.

ചൈനയുടെ തലസ്‌ഥാനമായ ബീജിങിലാണു സംഭവം. കഴിഞ്ഞ 23ന്‌ രാത്രി ഫോഷന്‍ സിറ്റിയില്‍ ഒരു വിജനമായ റോഡ്‌. റോഡില്‍ ഒരു കാര്‍ ഒറ്റയ്‌ക്കു കിടക്കുന്നു. അതുവഴി കടന്നുപോയ ഒരു സംഘം ചെറുപ്പക്കാരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ കാറില്‍ 'എന്തോ' നടക്കുന്നു എന്നു സംശയം തോന്നി. അടുത്തുള്ള ഫാക്‌ടറിയിലെ ജോലി കഴിഞ്ഞ്‌ മടങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു ഇവര്‍. കക്ഷി മറ്റുള്ളവരെയും കൂട്ടി കാറിനുള്ളിലേക്ക്‌ ഒളിഞ്ഞുനോക്കി. കാറിനുള്ളില്‍ ഒരു ചെറുപ്പക്കാരന്‍ രണ്ടു വേശ്യകളുമായി ശൃംഗരിക്കുന്ന രംഗം ആറു യുവാക്കളും കണ്ടുരസിച്ചു.

പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ഇയാള്‍ ഇവരുമായി വാഗ്വാദത്തിലേര്‍പ്പെട്ടു. രംഗം വഷളാകുമെന്നു കണ്ട്‌ ഒടുവില്‍ യുവാക്കള്‍ പിന്‍മാറി. എന്നാല്‍ ജിയാങ്‌ വിട്ടുകൊടുക്കാന്‍ തയാറായില്ല. പിറകേ ചെന്ന്‌ യുവാക്കളുടെ നേതാവിനെ കുത്തിവീഴ്‌ത്തി. തടയാന്‍ വന്ന മറ്റു മൂന്നുപേരെ നന്നായി കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്‌തശേഷമാണ്‌ ജിയാങ്‌ മടങ്ങിയത്‌. ആരും കാണുന്നില്ല എന്നുറപ്പു വരുത്തിയാണ്‌ ഒരാളെ കുത്തിമലര്‍ത്തിയത്‌. പക്ഷെ കാലക്കേട്‌ കാമറയുടെ രൂപത്തില്‍ ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിപ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പോലിസുകാര്‍ നിരത്തില്‍ സ്‌ഥാപിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒളികാമറയില്‍ ഈ രംഗങ്ങള്‍ നന്നായി പതിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. എന്തായാലും ബീജിംഗ്‌ പോലിസ്‌ ഈ മുപ്പത്തിരണ്ടുകാരനെ ഉടന്‍തന്നെ അറസ്‌റ്റ് ചെയ്‌ത് കൊലക്കുറ്റത്തിനു കേസെടുത്തു. പോലിസുകാര്‍ പെരുമാറിയപ്പോള്‍ വള്ളിപുള്ളി തെറ്റാതെ സംഭവങ്ങളെല്ലാം ഇയാള്‍ തുറന്നുപറഞ്ഞു.

Device mimicking retinal circuits could help blind see

Sheila Nirenberg, professor of neuroscience at Cornell University, US, told a San Diego seminar that her device 'mimics the action of the front end circuitry of the retina', (especially when they die of disease), enabling images to be fired to the brain once more. 

So far, the device has only been tested on mice, but when asked if it could be adapted for humans in 10 years, she replied: 'I'm hoping less.'

'I study how the brain uses patterns of electrical activity to see, to hear, to reach for an object. I've been starting to use what we've learned about these patterns of electricity to develop prosthetic devices,' Nirenberg added.

She explained that if a person has a retinal disease, there's very little that can be done for them, with drug treatments only effective on a small number of sufferers.

There are prosthetic devices, but they only allow patients to see simple images, mainly just outlines. Nirenberg describes her device as something 'that could make a difference'.

AMU's special centre launched in Kerala

Sibal dedicated the centre to the nation. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy praised the efforts of the previous Left government to ensure that the centre was set up. 'When we took over the government, we also did our bit and finally it has become a reality,' said Chandy.

The AMU special centre is being set up here as part of the plans to set up five such AMU centres in the country. 

The first batch of classes for MBA and LLb have already commenced at a temporary centre near the new campus.

During the previous Left government's tenure, Indian Union Muslim League, an ally of the Congress, was insistent that the new centre be set up near Panakkad, which is the headquarters of the party.

But last year, the Left government took the lead and got full possession of the 336 acres at Cholamalla in Malappuram district, which has the largest Muslim population in the state.

At Saturday's function, Sibal also laid the foundation stone for the new campus. Five hostels for men and three hostels for women would come up soon.

The central government has sanctioned Rs.200 crore for the AMU centre. Its campus is expected to be ready in five years, and will have facilities from pre-school to a full-fledged medical college.

The state government will spend Rs.100 crore on the development of the campus.

AAA 'The Dirty Picture' most viewed on mobile in 2011

Thanks to Vidya Balan's oomph, content related to 'The Dirty Picture' got grabbed maximum eyeballs on the mobile platform, while controversial Poonam Pandey took away the lion's share of views among models, says a survey.

The findings have been announced by Vuclip, an independent mobile video company.

Among the most watched Indian videos on mobile, cinema-related content reigned supreme and out of them 'The Dirty Picture' was the most watched, with over 13,24,000 mobile views, said a press statement.

Content related to Shah Rukh Khan's mega production 'RA.One' garnered over 8,00,000 video views, which is almost more than double the mobile video views received by content of the much-hyped 'Kolaveri di' song from the upcoming Tamil movie '3'.

Although Dhanush's 'Kolaveri Di' was a super hit on youtube, but mobile users showed more interest in singer Sonu Niigaam's four-year-old son Nevaan's version of the same song. 

Nevaan's version received over 2,86,000 video views compared to Dhanush's Tamil-English number, which just got over 56,000 views.

Among the models, Poonam who came into limelight after announcing that she would strip if India won the World Cup earlier this year, received over 100,000 mobile video views.

She pipped Pakistani model Veena Malik and Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone. Veena received 18,697 mobile video views, propelled by the news for her controversial nude picture on a magazine's cover, while Sunny, who caused a flutter with her entry into the reality show 'Bigg Boss 5', got less than 2,500 mobile video views.

Al Qaeda leaders leaving Pakistan, moving to Africa: Report

British officials believe that a 'last push' in 2012 may destroy Al Qaeda's remaining senior leadership in Pakistan, The Guardian reported.

Many senior Al Qaeda members have been killed in air strikes by unmanned drones and 'only a handful of the key players' remain alive, said an official.

Al Qaeda's top leader Osama bin Laden was gunned down in Pakistan's Abbottabad town May 2 by US commandos who launched a daring operation using stealth helicopters.

Sources said at least two relatively senior Al Qaeda leaders have made their way to Libya, with others intercepted en route. This has caused fears that north Africa could become a new 'theatre of jihad'.

'A group of very experienced figures from north Africa left camps in Afghanistan's (northeastern) Kunar province where they have been based for several years and travelled back across the Middle East,' a source said, adding: 'Some got stopped but a few got through.'

The media report said it was not clear whether the move from Afghanistan-Pakistan to north Africa was prompted by a desire for greater security that may be unlikely as coalition forces begin to withdraw from Afghanistan or part of a strategic attempt to exploit the aftermath of the Arab spring. 

A smaller flow of volunteers reaching makeshift bases in Pakistan's tribal areas has complicated matters for Al Qaeda. 

'I think they are really very much weakened,' an official was quoted as saying. 

'You can't say they don't pose a threat -- they do -- but it's a much lesser one.'

Intelligence sources told The Guardian they estimate that there are less than 100 'Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda-affiliated' militants in Afghanistan.

On the Haqqani network, an official said there was evidence it had been acting as intermediaries between the Pakistani secret services and militant groups.

'To move against the Haqqanis is a no-win option for the Pakistani military. If they suffer heavy casualties and fail to eliminate the group, they lose their authority and a key interlocutor. If they succeed, they lose a key asset,' the official said.
